TESTOSTERONE HELPS FIGHT BEER BELLY Doctors have come up with a testosterone treatment that fights the beer belly. By doubling the blood level of the hormone in a group of patients researchers reduced their obesity by more than 15% in just six months. At the same time, cholesterol levels and blood pressure also dropped. The treatment could pave the way for new ways of tackling the fat concentrated around the male abdomen - popularly known as the beer belly or pot belly. Attendees at a London conference on male menopause were presented information from a Russian study that indicated higher testosterone levels may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's, as well as having beneficial effects on bone health, diabetes and depression. The risk is that testosterone supplements could increase the likelihood cancer, or the possibility of existing cancer spreading. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001838.php BEER DIVIDEND SAVES GERMAN BREWERY A small brewery in Germany has been saved from bankruptcy by offering new shareholders cases of beer as dividends. Otherwise it would have had to close April 1. In need of $800,000 in capital, the Haerle brewery in Koenigseggwald offered a dividend of five cases of beer for every new share bought in an issue offering at $500 face value. The brewery, founded in 1820 and owned by the same family since 1896, quickly sold all 1,600 shares, primarily to local residents. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001848.php MISS RHEINGOLD TO RETURN - AS A BARTENDER The Rheingold Brewing Co. has put a new spin on the once famous Rheingold Girl with hopes of resurrecting the beer brand in New York City. The new campaign represents Rheingold's second shot in five years at the $40 million New York metropolitan area beer market, the largest in the country. The previous effort, in 1998, proved unsuccessful as the marketing program that played up its macho personality and heritage failed to attract younger audiences. The new Miss Rheingold - who will be selected this month - will make guest appearances and appear in billboard advertising, just as she did in the 1950s when the contest drew millions of ballots and competed with Miss America in popularity. The new Miss Rheingold, however, will be one of New York City's bartenders. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001840.php ORIGINAL PORTLAND ALE BACK, AND DELIVERED BY DRAFT HORSE Portland Brewing enlisted the help of a 2,550-pound Belgian draft horse to re-introduce its original Portland Ale to the Oregon beer market. Buck - who stands 19.2 hands high (nearly 10 feet from the ground to the top of his ears) and weights 1.25 tons - pulled a wagon that delivered Portland Ale to Rogue Ales Public House, Jimmy's Macs, McCormick and Schmicks and Dan & Louis Oyster Bar. Introduced in 1986, Portland Ale was among the first craft beers available on tap in the Rose City, helping spark a local and national craft brewing renaissance. "We're celebrating the re-release of Portland Brewing's first beer, as well as our status as Portland's last independent brewery and bottler," says Portland Brewing President and Founder Fred Bowman. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001837.php REAL ALE FESTIVAL DRAWS RECORD CROWDS Chicago's Real Ale Festival drew record crowds last weekend as consumers from 33 states and at least six different countries had more than 220 brands of cask-conditioned beer.
