Lajitas' Beer Drinking Mayor
By Mark Tumarkin
Now, you may think that a beer drinking mayor isn't unusual enough to command much (if any) attention in this whacky political world. Think again, this one's a goat. That's right, a goat. I was tipped off by the following post from Tom Schlafly, St Louis brewer and organizer of the Beer Drinkers Party··..

As I learned from The New York Times of August 5, 2002, some folks in Texas are way ahead of me. At this point, I must issue Dave Barry's favorite disclaimer: I am not making this up. The town of Lajitas, Texas elected as mayor a goat named Clay Henry III, whose principal qualification for office is a fondness for beer. A political dissident, however, apparently took offense to "wasting" beer on a goat and committed an act of political terrorism, the description of which might offend squeamish readers of The Forum. According to Sheriff Dodson, an assassin named Hargrove castrated the mayor. Surely no one has ever paid more dearly for his fondness for beer than Clay Henry, III, the mayor of Lajitas, Texas. After reading this, a little web-surfing turned up the following link to the original article in the NY Times-

Just goes to show, Dubbya ain't the be-all or end-all of Texas politicians; they do have some class acts in the Lone Star State.
