Minutes Jan. 5, 2001 (December meeting)
Sue Smith

Meeting was held in the home of Dave and Julie Williams with a good attendance. Mark Tumarkin, the primary fermenter, discussed the following points of interest:

1) Upcoming beer judgings are the Big Bend Brewoff in Tallahassee on Jan. 20, Meadlenium in Orlando on Jan. 27, and the State Fair in Tampa in Feb. One need not be a BJCP judge to go and have a super good time. Those with knowledge of beer may judge, those not sure of themselves may steward and still taste the beers and learn. Tallahassee group will try and find club members to put you up for the night. Notify Jamison. Robert Riley should know how to contact her.

2) Next categories for the monthly contest are Category 11 - Old Ales and Wee Heavies and Category 12 - Imperial Stouts and Barleywines. Get your heavies out.

3) The January meeting will be last Friday at Fred's house. Ray will discuss Belgians with tasting.

4) Medieval Faire is coming up, two weekends this time, the 3-4 and 10,11 of Feb. The main booth will be outside the food courts with the satellite down by the main building this time. Suggestions were asked for regarding how to make it more efficient this time but were tabled temporarily to be reconsidered by committee later. Please give your suggestions to Wayne, Sue, or Mark to be hashed out with anyone else who would like to get involved. If you know when you will be able to help, please let Ray Badowski know. He will be scheduling. If you have some good friends who might like to lend a hand for a good time, outsiders are welcome.

Sue gave a very short talk on porters and stouts followed by a great tasting thanks to many super beers brought by Robert Riley, a Brooklyn black chocolate stout brought back by Dave Perez, a stout all the way from Alaska from (I blew a .19 on the breathelizer, so forgive me if I get the rest wrong) from Richard? The beers tasted were Entire Butt English Porter, Deep Shaft Stout, Youngs Double Chocolate Stout, Rogue Shakespeare Stout, Guinness Extra Stout, Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (a true Imperial Stout and the best of the night), Saranac Stout, Stoudt's Fat Dog Stout, Mendocino Black Hawk Stout, D. Carnegie & Co. Porter from Sweden, Fuller's London Porter, Bert Grant's Imperial Stout, St. Peter's Old Style Porter, Flag Porter made with yeast collected from a ship wreck in the 1800's, Maclay Oat Malt Stout (another standout in a crowd with no losers), Anchor Porter, St George Brewing Co. Porter, Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout, Founders Mishawaka Brewing Co. Dry Stout, Alaskan Brewing Co. Smoked Porter, Deschutes Brewing Obsidian Stout, Hebrew Messiah Stout (a really good beer despite the label with two half naked hippies on it), Sierra Nevada Stout, Humboldt Brewing Co. Oatmeal Stout, Lion Stout from Ceylon, and the last two batches of Wayne's mocha Porter, which turned out to be among the best of the night. Thanks to everyone who made this a great tasting and remember, the club will pay for any beers you bring back from those trips out of state, so keep them coming.
